Instagram Quick Guide
What the icons mean — and how to use them strategically
Bottom Navigation (Main Menu)
Home (House Icon) - Your main feed. Where posts from accounts you follow appear.
Reels (Play Icon) - Short-form vertical video feed. Strong for discovery beyond your followers.
DM Arrow (Bottom Center) - Direct Messages — and your main sharing hub.
Search (Magnifying Glass) - Explore page + search tools. Where new audiences find content.
Profile (Your Icon) - Your personal profile and grid.
Post Interaction Icon
(These directly affect visibility)
Like (Heart) - Quick engagement signal.
Comment (Speech Bubble) - Opens comment thread. Public comments boost visibility more than story replies.
Share (Arrow) - Send via DM or add to Stories. Private amplification.
Repost (Looped Arrows) - Shares content directly to your profile (with credit). Use intentionally — easy to tap accidentally.
Save (Bookmark) - Saves to private collections. Strong signal of value to the algorithm.
Stories
Colored Ring Around Profile - Indicates new story content.
Reply Field - Respond privately via DM.
Progress Bar at Top - Shows how many story slides remain.
Important: - Story engagement is private. Post engagement (likes + comments) is public — and more powerful for reach.
Inside Direct Messages (DM Screen)
Camera - Send photo or video.
Microphone - Send voice message.
Heart - Quick reaction.
Arrow - Forward content to another conversation.
Dot Indicator - Unread message.
W4W Strategic Reminder
If we want to grow together:
• Comment on posts (not just stories)
• Tag accounts directly in posts
• Collaborate when possible
• Share intentionally
Community engagement isn’t passive. It’s visible support — and visible support creates momentum.
