Practical Tips from W4W — Audit Your Subscriptions (The Sneaky Edition 😅)
Welcome to Practical Tips from W4W
We’re starting a new series inside Women for Women called Practical Tips from W4W — simple ideas, small habits, and useful reminders that can make everyday life feel a little lighter, more organized, and a little less overwhelming.
Not everything has to be complicated to make a difference.
Sometimes the smartest thing we can do is simply pause… and pay attention.
Which brings us to subscriptions.
The Sneaky Subscription Problem 😅
I realized recently how easy it is for subscriptions to quietly pile up.
One streaming service.
One grocery membership.
A meditation app.
Cloud storage.
Meal kits.
Audiobooks.
Music subscriptions.
A free trial you forgot to cancel.
And in my case…
Mushroom coffee. ☕🍄😂
Apparently at some point I became fully convinced lion’s mane and cordyceps were about to change my life… and then completely forgot I was still paying for it every month.
That’s the sneaky thing about subscriptions:
Most of them don’t feel expensive individually.
But $8 here.
$14 there.
$22 somewhere else.
Suddenly, a few hundred dollars a month can quietly disappear without us even realizing it.
The “Would I Buy This Today?” Test
So here’s a simple challenge that’s worth doing a few times a year:
Set aside 20–30 minutes and look through your bank statement or credit card for recurring charges.
Then ask yourself three questions:
Not every subscription is bad.
Some are absolutely worth it because they save time, reduce stress, help us stay healthy, organized, connected, or entertained.
But many of us keep paying for things out of habit rather than intention.
The Someday Trap
That online class we meant to finish. The app we downloaded during a motivated season of life. The subscription box we forgot existed. The premium version we no longer need.
It happens to all of us.
We keep things because we think: “Someday I’ll use it.”
But sometimes “someday” quietly turns into another year of monthly charges.
And honestly? You can always sign back up later if you truly miss it.
A 20-Minute Financial Reset
Most people are surprised how quickly a simple subscription audit can free up an extra $50, $100, or more each month.
That money could go toward:
• savings
• travel
• experiences
• family activities
• paying down debt
• supporting local businesses
• or simply creating a little breathing room
One small habit. One quick review. A little more intention with where your money goes.
No Shame. Just Awareness.
This isn’t about guilt. We all do this.
Life gets busy. Free trials happen. Monthly charges become invisible.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s awareness.
Because once you notice what’s quietly draining your account, you get to decide what actually deserves a place in your life.
Simplifying Can Feel Like a Raise
There’s something oddly satisfying about simplifying.
Less clutter.
Less waste.
More clarity.
And sometimes canceling a few forgotten subscriptions can feel a little like giving yourself a raise.
Not because you suddenly made more money…
…but because you became more intentional with the money you already have. The Sneaky Subscription Problem
